JSW MG Motor India has introduced a new electrified vehicle platform for our market. It is called ADAPT, and the company says a plug-in hybrid SUV and an electric car based on it will reach showrooms within FY2027.
What Is ADAPT?
ADAPT is short for Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology. It is a flexible base that can take several kinds of electrified powertrains. The company says it can host self-charging hybrids, plug-in hybrids, pure electric vehicles and range extenders — where a petrol engine works only to charge the battery.
The platform was displayed as a rolling chassis with plug-in hybrid and electric drivetrain setups. MG also states that ADAPT can be built around both 400V and 800V electrical systems.
Launch Plans
The first EV and the first plug-in hybrid on this base will arrive in the current financial year. MG has also confirmed a second electric model by March 2027, though that car is likely to use a different platform.
A published report indicates that ADAPT will form the base of MG's version of the Wuling Starlight 560 SUV, which has been seen testing on Indian roads.
Technology In The Plug-In Hybrid
MG has shared some technical details about the upcoming PHEV. It will pair a petrol engine with a 10-in-1 electric drive unit, which the company calls a first in India. There is also what MG describes as a world-first Electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. Even the petrol engine has been tuned and developed purely for hybrid duty.
The plug-in hybrid will offer four drive modes — Pure Electric, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Direct Engine Drive. In Series mode, the engine powers the electric motor. In Parallel mode, both engine and motor drive the wheels. In Direct Engine Drive, the engine alone turns the wheels. The car will shift between these modes on its own, depending on driving conditions and what the driver asks for.
Why This Matters
Electric car sales in India are rising, but plug-in hybrids are still uncommon here. A single platform that supports EVs, PHEVs and range extenders gives MG room to offer several options to buyers. That could appeal to people who want an electrified car but are not yet ready to depend fully on charging points.
MG has not shared specifications, range figures or prices for the new models yet. Those details should come closer to launch.
