BYD is preparing to expand its presence in the premium-car market with Denza, its luxury new-energy vehicle brand. While Denza cars are not officially on sale in India yet, reports suggest the company is evaluating the market, with the D9 luxury MPV and high-performance Z9 GT among the most relevant models.
The Denza N8 has also attracted interest among Indian buyers searching for a large BYD luxury SUV. However, the original N8 is no longer a current global product, making it important to distinguish it from newer models such as the N8L.
Here is everything currently known about the Denza N8, D9 and Z9 GT.
What is Denza?
Denza began as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz. BYD subsequently took full control of the business in 2024 and is now positioning Denza as its international luxury-technology brand.
The brand sits above regular BYD models and focuses on premium interiors, powerful electrified powertrains, advanced suspension systems and new vehicle-control technologies.
Denza N8: Powerful plug-in-hybrid SUV, but not expected in India
The original Denza N8 was a large plug-in-hybrid SUV sold in China between 2023 and 2024. It was available with six- and seven-seat configurations and measured 4,949mm long, 1,950mm wide and 1,725mm tall, with a 2,830mm wheelbase.
Its DM-p plug-in-hybrid system combined a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with front and rear electric motors. The electric motors produced a combined 360kW, while the SUV could accelerate from 0–100km/h in approximately 4.3 seconds.
Denza quoted a combined driving range of up to 1,030km under the applicable Chinese test cycle, using a fully charged battery and a full fuel tank.
The N8 was launched in China at a starting price of around 319,800 yuan, equivalent to approximately ₹42 lakh before Indian import duties and taxes.
However, the original Denza N8 has been discontinued, and there is no confirmed plan to launch it in India. Prices circulating on Indian automotive websites are estimates rather than official BYD India prices.
Denza has since introduced the much larger N8L, a new six-seat plug-in-hybrid flagship SUV that is technically unrelated to the discontinued N8. Therefore, buyers should not confuse the N8 with the newer N8L.

Denza D9: Luxury MPV targeting the Toyota Vellfire
The Denza D9 is a large luxury MPV designed for chauffeured buyers, business executives and families seeking first-class rear-seat comfort.
Its three-row, seven-seat cabin uses a 2+2+3 configuration, with two individual captain’s chairs in the second row. Depending on the market and variant, equipment includes powered and ventilated seats, massage functions, entertainment displays and a premium multi-screen cockpit.
Globally, the D9 has been offered with battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid powertrains. The electric version is the more likely candidate for India because fully electric vehicles attract a lower GST rate than plug-in hybrids.
The D9 EV sold in Australia is available in two versions:
- D9 EV FWD: AUD 85,990 before on-road costs
- D9 EV AWD: AUD 95,990 before on-road costs
The 2026 D9 launched in China with six electric and plug-in-hybrid configurations priced between 389,800 and 489,800 yuan. This translates to roughly ₹51–64 lakh before Indian taxes, homologation costs and import duties.
If introduced as a fully imported vehicle, the Denza D9 is expected to cost approximately ₹80 lakh to ₹1 crore ex-showroom in India. It would compete with premium MPVs such as the Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LM and Mercedes-Benz V-Class.
BYD has not announced an official Indian launch date or variant list, so the projected price must be treated as an industry estimate.

Denza Z9 GT: A 1,000hp electric rival to the Porsche Taycan
The Z9 GT is Denza’s technology and performance flagship. It is a five-door shooting brake measuring more than 5.1 metres long and is positioned against cars such as the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo.
The latest European electric version uses three motors and a large 122.49kWh battery. It produces approximately 850kW, or 1,140hp, with 1,210Nm of torque. Denza claims a 0–100km/h time of around 2.7 seconds for this version.
Its maximum European WLTP range is approximately 599km. In China, the latest model carries a claimed range of up to 1,036km under the more optimistic CLTC test cycle. These figures are not directly comparable, and the WLTP number provides a more realistic reference for international buyers.
The Z9 GT is based on Denza’s e3 platform and uses independent rear-wheel motors and rear-wheel steering. These technologies allow unusual manoeuvres, including diagonal movement and tight turns, while also improving stability at higher speeds.
Internationally, Denza offers the Z9 GT as both a fully electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid. Reports indicate that BYD is considering the Z9 GT for India, with an estimated price of approximately ₹1.2 crore ex-showroom if imported as a completely built unit.

Which Denza model makes the most sense for India?
Among these three vehicles, the D9 appears to have the clearest business case. India’s luxury MPV segment has expanded, and models such as the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM have demonstrated demand for spacious, chauffeur-oriented vehicles.
The Z9 GT would serve a different purpose. Its performance, technology and distinctive shooting-brake design could help establish Denza as a serious luxury brand, even if its sales volumes remain limited.
The original N8, meanwhile, is unlikely to reach India because it has already been discontinued. If Denza wants to introduce a flagship SUV, a newer model such as the N8L or N9 would be a more probable candidate.
For now, Indian buyers should wait for an official announcement from BYD India before treating any Denza launch date, variant or price as confirmed.
