Electric two-wheelers reached **9.9% market penetration during April-August FY2026-27**, placing the segment close to the 10% threshold as India's EV incentive programmes continue to concentrate on high-volume mobility.

Operational data covering the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) and PM E-DRIVE indicates that the programmes have supported approximately **34.18 lakh electric vehicles**.

## Two-wheelers account for 91% of supported EVs

The supported vehicle total includes:

- **31.19 lakh electric two-wheelers**
- **2.88 lakh electric autos**
- **236 electric trucks**
- Other eligible vehicle categories covered by the programmes

Electric two-wheelers therefore represent roughly 91% of the supported total. Their dominance reflects both the scale of India's two-wheeler market and the relatively lower subsidy required per vehicle compared with buses or trucks.

Electric L5 three-wheelers recorded penetration of approximately **46.1%** during April-August, showing how quickly electrification has progressed in last-mile passenger and cargo use.

## Buses and trucks remain a different challenge

Government updates say tenders covering around **13,800 electric buses** have been concluded. A separate allocation of INR 500 crore is intended to support more than 5,600 eligible electric trucks.

These commercial categories require larger batteries, specialised charging and higher initial investment. Their raw vehicle counts will therefore remain much lower than scooters, even when their fuel and emissions impact per vehicle is considerably larger.

## Estimated fuel and emissions savings

Government estimates attribute daily savings of approximately **31.3 lakh litres of fuel** and **38.5 lakh kg of carbon dioxide** to vehicles supported under the schemes.

These are programme estimates rather than direct measurements from every vehicle. Actual savings depend on vehicle use, distance travelled, electricity generation and which petrol or diesel vehicle an EV replaces.

## Is 10% penetration a turning point?

Crossing 10% would be symbolically important, but consistent month-to-month adoption matters more. The two-wheeler market is sensitive to purchase price, subsidy changes, financing, product availability and consumer confidence in battery life and service.

Electric scooters currently provide much of the volume. Electric motorcycles remain a smaller part of the market, leaving significant room for manufacturers that can deliver practical range and competitive pricing.

## What to monitor

The next indicators are whether electric two-wheelers remain above 10%, how adoption performs after incentive changes, and whether manufacturers expand service coverage beyond major cities.

PM E-DRIVE has helped the market approach an important threshold. The next phase will require stronger products, dependable service and falling battery costs so demand becomes less dependent on subsidies.
