Odisha is planning an 871-acre semiconductor and electronics hub near Naraj, between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has called it an “Odisha Silicon Valley”.
The announcement came at Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi. The state is building a land bank for the hub and has already held talks with around 10-12 companies, according to a published report.
Direct Link to Electric Vehicles
The plan adds to Odisha's growing chip programme, which includes SiCSem's silicon carbide (SiC) facility. SiC is a power semiconductor technology that matters greatly for EVs.
SiC chips are used in traction inverters and power conversion inside electric vehicles. They also work efficiently at higher voltages, which makes them useful for fast-charging systems — a key part of India's EV infrastructure growth.
SiCSem Project Details
SiCSem is working with UK-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab on an integrated SiC compound semiconductor facility in Odisha. It is approved under the India Semiconductor Mission.
The planned capacity is 60,000 wafers a year, with packaging capacity of 96 million units. Devices made here are meant for EVs, fast chargers, railways, defence equipment, data centres, consumer appliances and solar inverters.
On September 15, the Unit Approval Committee of Falta Special Economic Zone cleared SiCSem's proposal for a unit at IDCO Infovalley-II in Khordha district.
The unit will spread over 21.889 acres with an investment of ₹3,406.25 crore. It will make SiC diodes and SiC MOSFETs, with annual production of 4.8 million diodes and 91.2 million MOSFETs. Around 1,270 jobs are expected.
A Wider Chip Base
Odisha also hosts 3D Glass Solutions' advanced packaging project worth ₹1,943 crore. It uses glass substrates and plans to produce 50 million assembled units a year.
SiCSem and IIT Bhubaneswar are also developing indigenous SiC crystal growth technology for 150mm and 200mm wafers. This aims to build domestic capability in power semiconductors.
Why It Matters for EV Buyers
Most SiC chips used in Indian EVs and chargers are imported today. Domestic SiC manufacturing could lower costs over time and strengthen the supply chain for India's fast-growing EV market.
The proposed 871-acre hub near Naraj would give the state more space to bring chip and electronics makers into one cluster.
