Editorial note: This is a preliminary BestEV expert assessment based on official MG specifications, launch inspections and analysis from multiple automotive publications. BestEV has not yet conducted its own instrumented road test of the Hector Tomahawk PHEV, so real-world EV range, depleted-battery fuel economy, ride quality and hybrid-system refinement remain to be verified.
The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is one of the more unusual electrified SUVs to arrive in India in 2026. It combines a 20.5 kWh plug-in battery with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, allowing it to operate as a pure EV for daily journeys while retaining petrol backup for longer trips.
MG claims more than 115 km of pure-electric range and more than 1,100 km of total driving range with a full battery and fuel tank.
That gives the Tomahawk PHEV a clear proposition: use electricity for daily commuting, but keep the flexibility of petrol for long-distance travel where charging may be uncertain.
Powertrain: more than a conventional hybrid
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle petrol engine producing 102 PS and 125 Nm, paired with an electric motor rated at 201 PS and 237 Nm.
Power is managed through MG's electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. The system can operate in four modes:
- Pure EV
- Series Hybrid
- Parallel Hybrid
- Engine Direct Drive
In Pure EV mode the battery and motor propel the SUV. In Series Hybrid mode the engine generates electricity while the motor drives the wheels. Parallel mode allows the engine and motor to work together, while Engine Direct Drive can use the petrol engine more directly under suitable highway conditions.
MG quotes a 0-100 km/h time of around 9 seconds.
The 115+ km EV range is the key feature
The most interesting figure is not the 1,100 km combined range. It is the 115+ km claimed pure-electric range.
That is far more electric capability than a conventional strong hybrid. For a household with home charging, a 40-60 km daily commute could potentially be completed mostly or entirely on electricity.
This makes the Tomahawk PHEV particularly relevant for owners who want an EV-like weekday experience but do not want to depend entirely on public fast charging for long intercity journeys.
Real-world range and mileage: still unverified
MG claims:
- 115+ km pure-electric range
- 1,100+ km combined range
BestEV is not treating either figure as a real-world result yet.
PHEV fuel economy varies enormously depending on charging behaviour. An owner who charges every night and drives short daily distances may use very little petrol. Another owner who rarely plugs in can see a completely different running cost.
Until independent instrumented testing is available, BestEV will list the official claims but will not publish a definitive real-world mileage figure.
Charging
The 20.5 kWh battery supports a 3.3 kW AC charger, with MG claiming roughly 7.5 hours for 10-100%.
The PHEV also supports 25 kW DC fast charging, with a claimed 30-80% charge in about 35 minutes.
For a full EV those numbers would look slow. For a PHEV designed mainly around overnight home charging, they are more acceptable. The DC option is useful as a backup rather than the main charging method.
MG also says running cost can be around ₹1/km in regular EV operation, roughly ₹3-3.5/km with occasional charging and around ₹5/km if the vehicle is never plugged in. These are manufacturer estimates, not BestEV test results.
Long-distance flexibility
The PHEV carries a 52-litre petrol tank in addition to its battery.
That removes much of the route-planning burden associated with long-distance EV travel. If a fast charger is occupied, unavailable or out of service, the car can continue using petrol.
This is where the PHEV has its strongest advantage over the full-electric Tomahawk: daily electric driving without making long highway trips dependent on charger availability.
Interior and practicality
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV is offered as a seven-seater.
MG claims 192 litres of boot space with all three rows in use and 528 litres with the third row folded.
The PHEV gets a Moroccan Brown and Carbon cabin theme. Equipment available across higher variants includes powered and ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, a large central display, digital driver's display, connected-car technology and premium audio.
The top Essence trim adds the richer technology package, including Level 2 ADAS.
Third-row comfort remains something BestEV would want to test before making a definitive judgment.
Safety
Safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, TPMS and four-wheel disc brakes.
Higher variants add a 360-degree camera, while the top Essence trim gets Level 2 ADAS.
An official NCAP crash-test rating has not yet been published, so BestEV is not assigning a separate crash-safety score at this stage.
Price and value
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV is offered in two versions:
- Exclusive 7S: ₹25.69 lakh ex-showroom
- Essence 7S: ₹27.79 lakh ex-showroom
MG also offers Battery-as-a-Service pricing starting at ₹21.79 lakh plus ₹3.20/km battery rental.
The challenge is that the Hector Tomahawk EV starts at ₹19.49 lakh. That leaves a premium of more than ₹6 lakh between the entry EV and entry PHEV.
That premium is easiest to justify for buyers who regularly make long journeys and place a high value on petrol backup.
Who should consider it?
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV makes the most sense when:
- You can charge at home.
- Most daily journeys fit within its electric range.
- You also make regular long-distance trips where public charging may be inconvenient.
If those conditions apply, the PHEV can deliver EV-like daily use without requiring every highway journey to be planned around charging stops.
If you already have reliable charging and rarely exceed the usable range of the full-electric Tomahawk, the cheaper EV deserves serious consideration.
BestEV Verdict
The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is a compelling bridge between an EV and a conventional SUV.
Its 20.5 kWh battery is large enough to make pure-electric commuting realistic for many households, while the petrol engine gives it the long-distance flexibility that some Indian buyers still want.
Its main compromises are price, relatively modest 25 kW DC charging and the extra mechanical complexity of a plug-in hybrid.
The biggest unanswered question is real-world efficiency. The 115+ km EV range and 1,100+ km combined-range claims need independent testing before they can be treated as representative everyday numbers.
For a household with home charging, substantial daily city use and frequent highway travel, the concept is strong. For buyers who rarely need petrol backup, the less expensive full-electric Hector Tomahawk may make more financial sense.
