The MG Hector Tomahawk is unusual because buyers can choose between two very different electrified powertrains on essentially the same large family-SUV platform: a full battery-electric EV and a plug-in hybrid PHEV.

The EV starts at ₹19.49 lakh, while the PHEV starts at ₹25.69 lakh. That ₹6.20 lakh entry-price gap changes the buying decision dramatically.

Price: the EV starts with a major advantage

The EV starts at ₹19,49,800, compared with ₹25,69,800 for the entry PHEV. At the top end, the EV Essence 7S is ₹23,49,800 and the PHEV Essence 7S is ₹27,79,800.

That means the PHEV asks buyers to pay substantially more for the security of a petrol engine and its long-distance flexibility.

For buyers who already have dependable home charging and can comfortably live within a full EV's usable range, the extra PHEV cost is difficult to ignore.

Range: 517 km EV versus 1,100+ km combined

The EV carries a much larger 69.2 kWh battery and has an official 517 km certified range.

Early independent EV road tests suggest a practical expectation of roughly 360-400 km, depending on speed, traffic, terrain, climate-control use and driving style. That is not a single controlled BestEV range-test result, but it provides a more useful early benchmark than the certification figure alone.

The PHEV takes a different approach. Its 20.5 kWh battery is claimed to provide 115+ km of pure-electric driving, after which its petrol engine can keep the vehicle moving. MG claims more than 1,100 km combined range with a full battery and fuel tank.

For daily commuting, 115 km of electric range could cover many owners' entire weekday use. For long journeys, the 52-litre fuel tank removes the need to plan every stop around a charger.

Charging: clear advantage to the EV

The full EV supports 90 kW DC charging and a 7.4 kW AC home charger.

The PHEV supports only 25 kW DC and 3.3 kW AC.

Both quote around 35 minutes for a 30-80% DC charge, but those numbers are not directly comparable because the PHEV battery is far smaller.

The EV is better suited to owners who will rely on public charging during long trips. The PHEV is designed more around overnight home charging, with DC charging as a useful backup.

Performance: the EV is quicker and simpler

The EV produces 204 PS and 310 Nm and reaches 100 km/h in a claimed 8.2 seconds.

The PHEV's electric motor produces 201 PS and 237 Nm, supported by a 102 PS 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine and MG's Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. MG quotes roughly 9 seconds to 100 km/h.

The PHEV can switch between Pure EV, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Engine Direct Drive modes.

On paper, the EV has the advantage in outright acceleration and mechanical simplicity. The PHEV's strength is not speed; it is flexibility.

City use: both can run electrically, but in different ways

For a buyer travelling 40-60 km per day with home charging, both versions can cover normal commuting without petrol.

The EV does this more efficiently and without carrying a combustion engine, fuel tank and hybrid transmission.

The PHEV, however, gives an owner the option to leave for a long highway journey immediately after the same electric commute without thinking much about charging infrastructure.

So the important question is not simply "Which is more efficient?" It is "How often do you actually need petrol backup?"

Highway travel: this is where the PHEV earns its premium

The PHEV's strongest case is unpredictable long-distance travel.

With the EV, a 500-700 km journey means planning charging stops and depending on charger availability and reliability.

With the PHEV, the driver can use electric energy first and continue with petrol when necessary. A charger being occupied or offline becomes an inconvenience rather than a trip-stopping problem.

For owners frequently travelling through areas with patchy charging infrastructure, that flexibility can be valuable.

Practicality: EV offers more configuration choice

The EV is offered in both 5- and 7-seat layouts. The five-seater has a large 610-litre boot, making it especially attractive for families that do not need a third row.

The PHEV is offered only as a seven-seater. It provides 192 litres behind the third row and 528 litres with that row folded.

For buyers who want maximum luggage space rather than seven seats, the EV has the clearer advantage.

Equipment and safety

Both share much of the same Hector Tomahawk architecture and technology. Depending on trim, equipment includes a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, connected-car functions, premium audio, six airbags and Level 2 ADAS.

Both also offer advanced vehicle-to-power functions, including V2L/V2H capability on the relevant trims.

An official NCAP crash-test rating has not yet been published, so BestEV is not assigning an independent crash-safety score to either version.

Running-cost reality

The EV has the simpler economics: charge the battery, drive, and electricity is the primary energy cost.

The PHEV's economics depend heavily on behaviour. If it is plugged in every night and most journeys stay within its electric range, petrol use can remain low. If the owner rarely charges it, much of the reason for paying extra for the plug-in hybrid disappears.

That makes home charging even more important for the PHEV than many buyers may initially assume.

Which buyer suits each version?

Choose the Hector Tomahawk EV if:

  • You have dependable home or workplace charging.
  • Most of your driving is city and predictable intercity travel.
  • A practical 360-400 km early real-world range expectation works for your use.
  • You want the lower purchase price.
  • You prefer a simpler all-electric powertrain.
  • You want the option of a five-seat version with a 610-litre boot.
  • You are comfortable planning charging stops on very long journeys.

Choose the Hector Tomahawk PHEV if:

  • You can charge at home but frequently travel long distances.
  • Your regular daily use fits within roughly the claimed 115 km electric window.
  • You often drive through areas where charging availability is uncertain.
  • You strongly value the ability to refuel quickly with petrol.
  • Seven seats are important.
  • You are comfortable paying more than ₹6 lakh extra at the entry level for that flexibility.

BestEV Comparison Verdict

These two Tomahawks solve different problems.

The Hector Tomahawk EV is the cleaner, simpler and substantially less expensive option. Its large battery, 517 km certified range and early real-world indications make it capable enough for most daily and intercity driving, while 90 kW DC charging gives it much better public-charging capability than the PHEV.

The Hector Tomahawk PHEV is aimed at a narrower use case: buyers who want to do most daily travel electrically but also make enough long, unpredictable journeys to value petrol backup. Its 115+ km claimed EV range is unusually useful for a plug-in hybrid, but the ₹6.20 lakh starting-price premium is significant.

For a household with dependable charging and mostly predictable driving, the EV makes the stronger financial case. For a household that frequently combines city commuting with long-distance highway travel through inconsistent charging corridors, the PHEV's extra flexibility can justify its added cost.

The PHEV conclusion remains preliminary until independent road tests establish its real-world electric range, depleted-battery fuel economy and powertrain refinement.
