Kia has extended its **assured buyback programme** to almost its entire Indian line-up, including electric vehicles. The scheme promises to buy the car back after three years at **up to 75% of its value for ICE models** and **up to 70% for EVs** -- turning a resale guess into a contractual number.

The programme was first introduced with the Syros EV. It now covers petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric models across the range, with different tenures and mileage caps depending on the powertrain.

## What the scheme promises

| Powertrain | Assured value after 3 years | Tenure options |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid | Up to 75% | 3, 4 or 5 years |
| Electric | Up to 70% | 3 or 4 years |

Annual mileage limits are **10,000 km, 15,000 km or 20,000 km**, and depending on the plan the total permitted distance can extend to **1 lakh km** over the ownership period. The buyback is available through authorised Kia dealerships.

## Which cars are covered

The programme covers the **Sonet, Syros, Seltos, Carens, Carens Clavis and Sorento**, across applicable powertrain options.

The exclusions are the **Carnival, EV9 and EV6**, all of which are imported as fully built-up units. Their absence makes sense: buyback schemes are easier to run on locally assembled cars with predictable resale markets.

## The EV number is lower than at launch

When Kia introduced the programme with the Syros EV, it advertised an assured value of up to **80% after three years** as an introductory offer. The expanded programme now offers **70%** on EVs.

That is still a strong number by Indian standards, where three-year resale values for electric cars have been volatile. But the shift from 80% to 70% is a reminder that the guarantee is a commercial decision, not a fixed feature of the car. Kia can change the terms for new buyers, and the figure that applies to you is the one in your agreement.

## Why the EV guarantee matters more than the ICE one

Petrol and diesel cars have deep, liquid used markets. An assured 75% is useful, but a seller could often get close to that on their own.

EVs are different. Battery health is difficult for a used buyer to verify, technology ages quickly, and the pool of second-hand EV buyers is smaller. A 70% guarantee removes most of that risk from the first owner and shifts it to Kia, provided the conditions in the agreement are met.

For buyers financing an EV, that matters twice: it protects the resale value and it makes the balloon or residual assumption in a loan easier to justify.

## What a buyback is -- and is not

A buyback is **not a lease**. You own the car, you pay the full price, and at the end of the tenure Kia's dealer network buys it back at the agreed percentage if you meet the conditions.

Those conditions typically include:

- Staying within the chosen annual mileage limit
- Servicing the car at authorised Kia workshops on schedule
- No major accident damage or structural repairs
- Meeting the vehicle condition standards in the agreement
- Completing the buyback within the specified window

The percentage applies to a base defined in the agreement. Check whether it is the ex-showroom price or another value, and read the fine print before treating the number as cash in hand.

## Does it make a Kia EV a safer buy?

It makes the **resale** safer, which is one of the biggest unknowns in EV ownership. It does not make the car cheaper to buy, and it does not cover battery degradation beyond the warranty terms.

Kia's EV line-up in India now spans the **Syros EV**, at about INR 18 lakh ex-showroom, and the **Carens Clavis EV**, at about INR 22.5 lakh. Both are locally assembled and both fall under the programme. The comparison with Hyundai is unavoidable. Hyundai offers a **60% assured buyback after three years** on the Creta Electric, which we covered when it was announced. Kia's 70% is higher on paper, though the two schemes may differ in mileage caps and conditions. Buyers cross-shopping the Creta Electric and Syros EV should compare the full terms, not just the headline percentage.

## The mileage cap is the catch

A 10,000 km annual cap suits a second car or a city runabout. It does not suit a high-mileage commuter or a family that uses one car for everything.

If you drive 20,000 km a year, choose the 20,000 km plan -- if it is offered on the model and tenure you want -- or accept that the buyback value may be adjusted. The scheme is designed around average use, and the buyers who benefit most are those who stay well inside the cap.

## What it means for buyers

**Get the residual value in writing.** Ask the dealer to show the buyback amount for your specific variant, tenure and mileage plan before you sign the purchase agreement.

**Compare the buyback with the loan.** A guaranteed 70% after three years can reduce the risk of negative equity, but it does not reduce the EMI. Use our [EMI calculator](/tools/emi-calculator) to see the monthly cost, and the [TCO calculator](/tools/tco-calculator) to include insurance, charging and servicing.

**Check the service requirement.** Missing a scheduled service can void the buyback. If the nearest authorised workshop is inconvenient, factor that into the decision.

**Do not buy for the guarantee alone.** The car still has to suit your range, charging and space needs. A buyback protects the exit, not the ownership experience.
