Jaguar Land Rover will launch **three electric Range Rover models in India early next year** and bring **Jaguar back to the Indian market in the second half of 2027** as an all-electric brand, the company's India managing director said this week.

The plan marks JLR's most concrete electric commitment to India so far, and it targets a specific gap: luxury buyers who want battery power without giving up the badge, the service network and the resale value they associate with the brand.

## The three electric Range Rovers

The launch line-up centres on the **Range Rover Electric** and the **Range Rover Sport Electric**, both built on JLR's MLA-Flex architecture, which supports combustion, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains on the same production line.

The Range Rover Sport Electric, already open for bookings in India, uses an **800-volt electrical architecture** and a dual-motor set-up producing **550 PS and 850 Nm**. JLR claims it retains 900 mm of wading depth, matching the combustion-powered Sport.

The modular platform is the strategic point. Because JLR can build EVs and ICE vehicles on the same line, production can follow demand rather than betting the factory on a single powertrain -- the mistake that limited the earlier I-PACE.

## Jaguar returns as an electric-only brand

Jaguar was withdrawn from India as part of the brand's reinvention. It returns in the second half of 2027 with an electric-only line-up, led globally by the **Jaguar Type 01**, a four-door GT built on the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture.

The Type 01 uses an **850-volt system and a 118 kWh usable battery**, with a claimed range of around 400 miles on the US EPA cycle. Production begins at Solihull in 2027. Whether India gets the Type 01 at launch or a later model has not been confirmed.

## Why JLR is betting on the top end

JLR's Indian business has become strikingly top-heavy. The Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport accounted for **more than 80% of its India sales**, with an average transaction price of roughly **INR 1.4 crore**.

That mix explains the strategy. Despite retail sales falling about **2% in FY26**, JLR India's revenue grew around **14%**, because the vehicles it sells are richer. Electrifying the flagship franchises protects the profit pool rather than chasing volume in a segment where it does not compete.

## The pricing problem nobody can fix quickly

The India-UK free trade agreement, in force since 15 July 2026, cut import duties on eligible British-built petrol and diesel cars from as high as 110%. Electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles were excluded from that concession for the first five years.

The consequence is blunt: **electric Range Rovers will not get the FTA duty benefit for another five years**, so JLR does not expect meaningful price relief on its EVs in the near term. The company's India leadership has said there are no technical roadblocks to the rollout, but pricing will stay where it is.

## What to watch

- **Launch timing:** three electric Range Rover models in early 2027, Jaguar in the second half.
- **Pricing:** expect the Range Rover Electric to sit above the Sport Electric, with the Sport Electric positioned close to the top of the luxury EV market.
- **Charging:** JLR's luxury positioning depends on home and destination charging support as much as public infrastructure.
- **Investment:** JLR has committed **GBP 18 billion through FY29** globally to platforms, technology and manufacturing.
