Electric bus operator Fresh Bus has moved into long-distance travel with a new all-electric AC sleeper service connecting Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The corridor runs over 600 km and is the company's first intercity route of this length. It forms part of a wider plan to create an electric intercity network across South India.
Onboard the New Coaches
The service uses 13.5-metre AC coaches with 36 sleeper berths each. Travellers get sanitised bedsheets, pillows and blankets. Reading lights, charging points, a free snack box and a bottle of water are also provided.
Expected Ridership
At full rollout, the operator expects the route to carry roughly 18,000 passengers every month. Occupancy is targeted at about 80% in the early days, climbing to nearly 90% once the service matures. Fresh Bus points out that its current routes already run at mid-to-high 80% occupancy, so the goal reflects existing demand.
Safety Arrangements
Each coach carries fire extinguishers, emergency exits with hammers and CCTV cameras fitted across the vehicle. Speed is governed during operations, and drivers face alcohol checks before starting duty.
Company's View
Sudhakar Chirra, founder and CEO of Fresh Bus, said both cities enjoy a steady and large passenger base, which makes the corridor a natural next step for the firm's electric mobility plans. He noted that moving past shorter routes to a 600-km-plus stretch shows electric buses can handle dependable long-distance journeys without giving up comfort or safety. He added that the goal is to build an operating model that can later be copied on other busy corridors across the country.
Shift in Passenger Priorities
The launch comes when intercity bus travel is no longer driven only by ticket price. Comfort, safety, punctuality and the overall journey experience now matter more. Fresh Bus also believes sustainability is playing a bigger role, particularly for younger and corporate travellers. An all-electric fleet, the company says, offers quieter, cleaner and safer trips with a premium feel.
Track Record and Expansion
Fresh Bus currently operates 13 routes and has served 25.6 lakh passengers so far. It also plans to add more connections between Bengaluru and Hyderabad to strengthen links between the two cities.
