Electric tractors could substantially lower the energy bill for farm work, according to an 11-month Haryana pilot by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). The results show promising task performance, alongside a battery-runtime challenge during demanding operations.

## What the field tests found

The pilot assessed five electric tractor models from four manufacturers in real agricultural and transport work.

Rotavating delivered the biggest reported agricultural saving: energy consumption dropped by 78%, while energy cost fell by 84% against diesel. During baling, electric tractors produced 17% more bales per hour with 64% lower energy cost.

These are results for specific tested operations. An 84% reduction in energy cost does not mean an 84% reduction in the total cost of owning or running a farm.

## Battery endurance is the key hurdle

Under heavy loads, the tested electric tractors managed approximately 1.5-3 hours of uninterrupted operation. Diesel tractors could work for 10-12 hours during peak harvesting periods.

Lighter activities, including hay raking, allowed electric tractors to achieve working durations closer to their diesel counterparts. Electric models also matched or improved on diesel task-completion times in most tests, despite lower rated horsepower.

## Opportunities beyond agriculture

The study points to commercial haulage and construction logistics as additional applications for electrification. ICCT recommends wider subsidy eligibility, public procurement for municipal and airport duties, and charging investment that includes fast-charging and battery-swapping pilots.

## What farmers should check before buying

**BestEV analysis:** A useful purchase comparison should start with the actual workload: implement compatibility, hours required between breaks, available charging power and local service support.

Buyers should also compare the purchase price, finance costs, battery warranty and likely downtime. Lower energy spending is valuable, but reliable completion of seasonal work matters just as much.

The pilot provides encouraging evidence for electric tractors in selected duties. Wider adoption will depend on matching the machine and charging arrangement to each operator's needs.
