Electric vehicles held a 64.90% share of India's three-wheeler retail market in September 2026, according to FADA figures reported by Autocar Professional. The segment recorded 1,32,570 registrations, up 22.25% year on year and 8.41% from August, making it the strongest September on record.

## Electric share climbs from a year earlier

EV penetration increased from 56.65% in September 2025, a gain of 8.25 percentage points. It was slightly below August 2026's 65.30%.

The comparison shows that electric three-wheelers strengthened their position over the year despite the small sequential decline in share.

## Rural retail grows faster

Rural three-wheeler retail rose 40.09% year on year, while urban retail grew 4.71%. These figures cover the entire three-wheeler segment and should not be interpreted as electric-only growth rates.

## What the numbers mean for EV buyers

BestEV's analysis: with electric vehicles accounting for nearly two-thirds of retail, buyers should give charging access, usable range and after-sales support the same attention as the purchase price.

For a driver-owner, the useful comparison is the cost of running a vehicle on a specific route. Charging time, passenger or cargo load, financing payments and service downtime can all affect daily earnings. A high market share alone does not establish that every electric model suits every application.

These are retail registration figures, rather than manufacturer dispatches. FADA's September dataset covered 1,468 of 1,469 RTOs, with Telangana three-wheeler registrations unavailable. Fuel shares are rounded.
