Automotive Test Systems (ATS) is developing a battery testing laboratory at Talegaon in Pune with a proposed initial investment of about INR 60 crore, according to an October 16 report.

The facility is intended to serve vehicle manufacturers, battery producers, technology developers and start-ups. It is being developed with a European testing and certification organisation.

## What the laboratory will test

The planned capabilities span batteries for electric two-wheelers through high-capacity packs used in heavy commercial vehicles.

Four areas form the core of its proposed services: performance, durability, safety and abuse testing. These cover normal operating behaviour, ageing through use and battery response under extreme or abnormal conditions.

The lab will expand ATS's existing EV testing infrastructure in Bengaluru and Coimbatore. The report does not specify a commercial opening date.

## Why local battery testing matters

BestEV's assessment is that access to domestic testing can help engineering teams investigate problems earlier and repeat validation as designs evolve. Shipping a pack abroad and waiting for a laboratory slot can complicate development, particularly for a smaller manufacturer.

A nearby facility can also make it easier for battery, vehicle and thermal-management teams to work through a failure together. The actual benefit will depend on equipment availability, testing scope and the laboratory's relevant accreditations.

## Performance and safety answer different questions

A battery can deliver the desired range while still requiring further durability or safety validation. Capacity testing measures how much usable energy it supplies under defined conditions. Durability assessment examines how performance changes with cycling and ageing.

Safety and abuse testing examine behaviour when conditions depart from normal use. Manufacturers need results relevant to their vehicle architecture rather than a single headline test result.

## What EV buyers should take from the announcement

A proposed testing laboratory is an infrastructure development. It does not certify every battery sold in the market or change an existing vehicle's warranty.

For buyers, the useful questions remain whether a specific model meets applicable requirements, how its battery is protected in service and how the manufacturer handles failures.

The investment highlights the engineering infrastructure needed as India's EV industry expands across scooters, cars, buses and trucks.
